I can tell you, there is a new restaurant that really forged a spot in my mental black book for great little spots to satisfy almost any dining desire. Alo (by La Duni), as per its menu, considers itself “contemporary street food of Mexico and Peru”… I just consider it YUMMY!

I found it by chance one day, as I was driving home, and thought, why not!! It is located on the southbound service road of I-75 and Knox. That is a booming little area, so I had to right in the big middle of it!! We decided to take a dear friend of ours to try it out… the good part is that we were all in an adventurous mood, so Alo was a great pick!! It’s menu is expansive, with so many different types and styles to choose from. At first, I was a little overwhelmed, but the staff seems to be trained for this. With our “deer in the headlights look” our waiter moved in and asked us what we liked, and suggested several things. At one point, our girlfriend (nosey little booger) was staring at the table next to us… they had just delivered something amazing. The waitress saw our friend about to break her neck trying to get a peek, so the waitress from the OTHER table stopped to explain what it was to all of us. Love that kind of service!!

As for the food, it was impeccable!! We started with the pulled turkey and dried cherry salad. This was truly something special… It had in it, in addition to the name sake, green apples, walnuts, white cheddar, extra virgin olive oil, and tossed in a lime-mustard vinaigrette. All those flavors mixed so well. To add, this was a HUGE salad!! Could have fed 4, but the three of us handled it! J For the second course, we enjoyed some ‘Anticuchos’, which translated into Moody Foodie-ese means little pork tenderloin pieces skewered and grilled, and covered with some wonderful Peruvian mildly spicy sauce!! YUM!! At this point we also had them bring out chips and salsa and a trial size of all the salsas. They have 5 different home made kinds!! In addition, we also had them bring out the sweet potato fries. These were done perfectly. Salty and crunchy on the outside with a sweet tender middle. YUM again!!

Our main course involved the 3 crispy shrimp tacos. Now, my initial expectations were totally off. I actually didn’t pick this, but I was SOOOO happy that someone did!! These tacos were lightly tempura fried shrimps served with pineapple pico de gallo, cabbage and jicama. These were so tasty!! Even if you aren’t a huge fan of cabbage, that won’t keep you from loving these!! They are truly a cut above!!

If you are in the mood for something different than the average Mexican food outing, this is your place!! The food is amazing, and the prices are reasonable. 2 great reasons to make this your next choice for an eating experience. (Incidentally, I have gone back 2 more times since I wrote this review 2 weeks ago!)

Until the next dish is served,
